A hallmark of the Religious Studies program is its desire and ability to reach out to students and scholars outside of the University of Minnesota. The Sacred Violence conference in 2008 was a large-scale example of this, bringing in not only scholars from across the country to present papers, but including faculty members from area colleges who were able to take advantage of the stellar lineup of researchers our program brought here.

A more recent and typical example is the workshop conducted by Robert Orsi from Northwestern University. His event here on campus was attended by our faculty and students, and also by scholars from United Theological Seminary, Macalester College, Morningside College, University of Tennessee, Carleton College, and Hamline University.

Programming like this creates interaction and dialogue among scholars in the region, which can only enhance research coming out of the University and provide unique high-level learning experiences for our students.

As the Religious Studies program continues to grow and further collaborate with community leaders and educational institutions, both regionally and nationally, support from alumni and friends is vital.  You are invited to join those who have already made a gift to help sustain the Religious Studies program and grow the program’s reputation for excellence. An increase in giving sends a very strong message: alumni believe in their department, and they want to support the important work of the faculty and the recruitment and retention of the best and brightest students. A gift to Religious Studies is a vote of confidence in the direction and priorities of the program. And it’s a boost to all of the people in the program who have aspired to greatness and dedicated themselves to achieving it.
